Culinary Innovation prof shines at Excellence in Agriculture Awards

When it comes to agri-food leadership in Ontario, Niagara College Culinary Innovation professor, Amy Proulx, PhD, is the cream of the crop.

Proulx (of Fenwick, Ontario) was awarded an Honorable Mention in Education Excellence at the 2024 Excellence in Agriculture Awards. The event, held on November 2 at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, recognized 13 winners and 16 honorable mentions in agriculture excellence across 11 diverse categories.

“Through her work at Niagara College, Dr. Proulx is inspiring our next generation of agri-food leaders and supporting the development and commercialization of new food products,” said Rob Flack, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness. “It was a pleasure to recognize her many accomplishments through the Excellence in Agriculture Awards program. Leaders like Dr. Proulx are a critical driving force behind our nearly $51 billion agri-food sector.”

Proulx is a Professor and Program Coordinator for NC’s Culinary Innovation and Food Technology (Co-op) program. She also brings her food science expertise to the College’s Research & Innovation division, as a Technical Research Leader for the Food & Beverage Innovation Centre.

“I’m delighted to be recognized by Minister Flack for my work in agrifood systems education in Ontario and around the world,” said Proulx. “Careers in agriculture and food manufacturing are essential for Ontario’s success as an agrifood industry powerhouse, and essential to all countries for their sustainable development.”

Since joining NC more than 13 years ago, Proulx has been an active advocate for agrifood education. In addition to her work at the College, she has been a progressive voice for almost a decade on Food Processing Skills Canada’s board of directors and has been involved with on a number of national-scale agrifood education projects.

“When I joined Niagara College, I made a public commitment to advocate for skills development and capacity building through high quality programming both within our college programs, as well as through our strong partnerships,” said Proulx. “I’ve been very fortunate to be supported wholeheartedly by Niagara College in this work because of our community vision for a successful and sustainable agrifood system. It’s been a privilege to travel the world developing pathways of learning success for our youth in agrifood careers.”

Maija Saari, Associate Dean of NC’s School of Culinary Arts, who supported Proulx’s nomination, applauded the news of her recognition at the Excellence in Agriculture Awards.

“Amy’s dedication to food science education globally is well-deserving of this prestigious provincial honour. While I know her counsel and contributions are highly valued within her professional field, I count myself very fortunate to have her on our NC faculty team,” said Saari. “Amy’s creative thinking, collaborative approach and boundless energy is deeply valued as a key contributor as we collectively strive to better integrate principles of science and safety within all of our food and beverage programs.”

Proulx has been involved with global food industry development through NC’s Global Education and Training projects in Jamaica and Vietnam. She has been an advocate for improved education and training for youth through her volunteer work with 4-H Canada, the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology, the United Nations Food Forum, and FoodGrads.

She was also recognized her tireless advocacy for small business in food and beverage, her award-winning Focus on Food Safety column for Food in Canada magazine, and her contributions to a recruitment and retention program with CareersNow! for workers in the food and beverage manufacturing sector.

Niagara College to expand mental health and addiction supports through new provincial funding

Niagara College is expanding its suite of mental health and addiction services for students through new funding from the provincial government.

Earlier this year, the Ontario government announced NC would be one of 10 postsecondary institutions to receive funding to support mental health projects in underserved communities across the province. As one of the selected recipients, NC will receive $868,625 in dedicated funding over two years to address extensive primary care and addiction service gaps and offer tailor-made supports for Indigenous students in partnership with Community Addictions Services of Niagara (CASON).

“We are grateful to the Ontario government for this funding that will allow us to expand our mental health and addiction services available to students at both Niagara College campuses,” said Dr. Chris McGrath, Vice President, Students. “Through this funding Niagara College is able to respond to the ongoing healthcare crisis in Ontario while addressing addiction and mental health service gaps experienced by NC students living in the Niagara region.”

This new project will be led by NC’s Health, Wellness and Accessibility Services and Indigenous Education departments and is expected to begin in winter 2024 and will address the following needs:

  • Reduce wait times and increase access to physicians on campus;
  • Create tailored pathways for Indigenous students, including culturally appropriate bridges between Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Western approaches to mental health;
  • Create wraparound health, wellbeing and education supports for students with complex mental health needs; and
  • Create tailored pathways for students needing addiction counselling.

“This funding will allow us to expand the College’s already comprehensive list of wellness services available to students,” said Dr. Karen Csoli, Director, Health, Wellness & Accessibility Services, Welland Campus. “Together with CASON, we look forward to addressing the need for preventative complex care intervention and the limitations of western medicine to support mental health and substance abuse for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students.”

Through this partnership, representatives from CASON will be on-site at both NC campuses one day a week to meet with and offer resources to those struggling with addiction.

“Students who are struggling with addiction are part of a vulnerable population,” said Dr. McGrath. “By partnering with CASON, we will be able to provide access to specialized, ongoing support in a safe and familiar environment where students can ask questions and seek help without fear of judgement.”

This new funding will complement previous NC projects in the mental health space including the creation of a Student Mental Health and Well-Being Framework in 2023 and a recent gift from the McCall MacBain Foundation that is providing mental health supports to more than 200 first-year healthcare students this fall. This funding will also support several pillars outlined in the College’s Together Campaign – the largest fundraising campaign in NC’s history which demonstrates our unique position to lead economic, social and cultural development and innovation in our community.

NC concludes largest-ever Fall Convocation ceremonies, graduating nearly 2,000 students

Niagara College wrapped up its Fall 2024 Convocation ceremonies today, celebrating nearly 2,000 graduates – the largest Fall Convocation in the College’s history.

Four ceremonies were held over two days at the Simplii Financial Athletic Centre at NC’s Welland Campus.

NC President Sean Kennedy shakes hand with graduate as they cross the convocation stage.

The morning ceremony began with a celebration of 535 graduates from programs within the School of Academic and Liberal Studies and School of Business and Management. The afternoon ceremony honoured 415 graduates from programs within the School of Community Services, School of Justice and Fitness, and School of Nursing and PSW.

NC President Sean Kennedy took the podium to share heartfelt words with graduates, encouraging them to reflect proudly on their NC journey and the moments that led to this special moment.

“This ceremony is about you,” said Kennedy. “It’s about looking back on where you’ve come from, it’s about being present in this moment to feel the groundswell of pride from your supporters and champions, and most importantly, to feel proud of yourself.”

NC President Sean Kennedy addresses the Fall Class of 2024 on October 25.

He also reflected on how dreams shape what lies ahead, urging graduates to stay inspired and keep their ambitions alive in this new chapter.

“This ceremony is about your dreams – the dream you’ve realized by joining our Niagara College alumni family, the dream you’re stepping into as you enter new careers or further educational pathways, and the dreams you’ve yet to imagine for your future.”

Special thanks were given to Niagara College Student Administrative Council (NCSAC) President Dipal Patel, who has participated in 38 NC convocation ceremonies over the course of her presidency. Friday’s afternoon ceremony was Patel’s last as a member of the convocation platform party, as she concludes her last term as NCSAC President in spring, 2025.

“Dipal exemplifies the very best of what it means to be part of our Niagara College family,” said Kennedy.

Ceremonies opened with a special performance by local Indigenous-led women’s drum group, the Strong Water Singers.

Each of the four ceremonies opened with a special performance by local Indigenous-led women’s drum group, the Strong Water Singers, whose songs celebrated the triumphant journeys and achievements of NC graduates.

A highlight of this year’s Fall Convocation ceremonies was the presentation of an Honorary Diploma in Skilled Trades to Chuck McShane, CEO of the Niagara Home Builders’ Association. McShane was honoured at the Thursday morning ceremony for his leadership in the skilled trades and home-building industry, his advocacy for youth in trades, and his dedication to community involvement and student learning.

McShane offered inspiring advice for graduates to carry forward as they leave their NC journey behind and embark on new paths.

“In the book of life, you have closed one chapter, but started another,” said McShane. “Your story will continue, and although it won’t always be a fairytale, it will be yours to write. Find courage when there is weakness, happiness when there is despair and resilience when faced with challenges.”

A recording of McShane’s convocation address can be viewed below.

At the end of each ceremony, graduates received well wishes from inspiring alumni through a video showcasing individuals from diverse NC programs who are now thriving in unique roles and sectors, offering a glimpse into their bright futures.

Graduates from the Fall 2024 Convocation ceremonies join the 5,500 graduates from spring 2023, becoming part of a proud community of more than 120,000 Niagara College alumni.

All Fall Convocation ceremonies were livestreamed and will remain available for viewing on Niagara College’s convocation website. Visit niagaracollege.ca/convocation to watch the ceremonies and celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2024.

NC ushers in Fall Convocation with honours for skilled trades leader

1,000 new grads from historic Class of 2024 celebrated on day one of ceremonies

The spirit of celebration was in the air as Niagara College kicked off Fall Convocation ceremonies for the latest graduates among its historic class of 2024.

The College’s first day of Fall ceremonies on October 24 marked a special milestone for 1,000 new graduates along with a Niagara resident honoured for championing the skilled trades.

Chuck McShane (Niagara-on-the-Lake), CEO of the Niagara Home Builders’ Association, was presented with an Honorary Diploma in Skilled Trades at the morning ceremony in recognition of his industry leadership, dedication to promoting the skilled trades, and his support for student learning at the College.

“Chuck is a true supporter of our College. We value his spirit of creativity and collaboration, which has helped to equip our School of Trades students with valuable hands-on experience to add to their toolkits,” said NC President Sean Kennedy.

McShane thanked the College and those who have supported him including his family, colleagues and friends, and addressed an audience of graduating students and guests.

“Take what your professors and teachers have taught you and continue to move forward through any obstacles that come your way. You have an obligation to leave this world a little better than how you found it by continuing to grow, contribute and mentoring those around you,” said McShane. “Embrace your skills, grow your craft, and don’t sweat the small stuff. Hold your head high and be proud of what you have accomplished.”

In his address to the fall graduates, Kennedy spoke about the importance of their accomplishment and encouraged them to make a difference.

“You’ve learned many lessons here at NC as you’ve trained for careers in industries and sectors that are driving our world forward and supporting our communities,” said Kennedy. “In an increasingly digital world, where AI is changing how we work and live, remember that nothing can replace the magic of human connection.”

The first day of Fall 2024 Convocation honoured 519 new graduates during the morning ceremony – including more than 290 from its School of Trades, more than 200 from its School of Allied Health (201), as well its schools of Media and Technology.

The afternoon ceremony celebrated 484 new graduates from NC’s schools of Business and Management; Environment and Horticulture; Culinary Arts; Hospitality and Tourism; and Wine, Beer and Spirits.

Fall Convocation ceremonies will continue on October 25, with NC’s schools of Business and Management, and Academic and Liberal Studies during the morning ceremony (10 a.m.); and schools of Community Services, Justice and Fitness, and Nursing and PSW during the afternoon ceremony (3 p.m.).

By the time the College caps off two days of Fall Convocation ceremonies, almost 2,000 new graduates will be celebrated, marking a record number for Fall. This follows its largest ever Spring Convocation in June which celebrated 5,500 new graduates.

“Congratulations to our Fall Class of 2024,” said Vice President Academic Fiona Allan. “You are now part of a proud community of more than 120,000 NC alumni who can be found succeeding and leading – not only here in Niagara, but across Canada and around the world.”

Fall 2024 Convocation ceremonies are held in person at the Welland Campus (Simplii Financial Athletic Centre). Each ceremony begins with drumming from the Strong Water Singers, an Indigenous collective of drummers from across the Niagara region.

NC’s Fall Convocation ceremonies may be viewed via livestream or watched later via the convocation website at niagaracollege.ca/convocation.

NC-led SONAMI receives $4-million investment from Government of Canada

Niagara College is pleased to announce a significant investment aimed at advancing manufacturing in southern Ontario. On October 16, 2024, Niagara College received $4 million from the Federal Economic Development Agency for southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) to support the Southern Ontario Network for Advanced Manufacturing Innovation (SONAMI). This announcement was made by Vance Badawey, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport and Member of Parliament for Niagara Centre, along with Chris Bittle, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities and Member of Parliament for St. Catharines, on behalf of the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister responsible for FedDev Ontario.

With this new funding, SONAMI will further build the capacity of southern Ontario’s advanced manufacturing sector with an emphasis on clean growth through programming that supports commercialization, scaling of firms, and fostering innovation solutions. In addition, the network plans to develop the future workforce and talent by engaging and training students on real-world projects with participating companies, acting as a hub for clients and partners to support industry needs through referrals and collaborations. The project will support federal key priorities by collaborating with partners and stakeholders to drive emerging growth opportunities and industrial transition in areas such as zero-emissions vehicles, clean growth, and advanced manufacturing. Additionally, the collaborative applied research and development projects will enhance greater diversity and inclusion in economic growth.
SONAMI plans to build upon the current regional ecosystem to bring robust technical and industry leadership, equipment, expertise, and solutions to manufacturers across southern Ontario. Through a “single-window” service model, SONAMI partners will offer specific expertise areas, allowing companies to access a broad range of knowledge and resources across its network.
Since 2016, SONAMI has been awarded $21.3M from FedDev Ontario, leveraging over $31.5M from its network members and industry partners (companies within the manufacturing industry). The wide-spanning network completed over 460 applied research projects, with over 379 industry partners (companies), creating and/or maintaining over 871 permanent jobs, engaging over 660 students in experiential learning opportunities. With the newly awarded funding, the network aims to support up to 90 businesses as they work to commercialize 45 new products, services, or processes. In addition, its goal is to create and maintain an additional 90 permanent and temporary jobs and provide skills training and development for 130 students and researchers, preparing young Canadians for the jobs of today and tomorrow.
