Tournament tees up support for student athletes

When it comes to support for Niagara College, the Foundation Golf Classic is a hole in one.

This year’s sold-out event, held on September 13 at Peninsula Lakes Golf Club, raised $51,000 in support of the College’s student athletes. About 150 golfers, including community and business leaders from across Niagara and the GTA, attended the tournament.

The event is not only a fundraiser but provides students with practical program-related experience. More than 75 students attended this year’s event, including varsity athletes from the NC Knights golf team varsity who provided clinic instruction to tournament participants before they teed off. Participants also had a chance to test out their longest drive abilities by going head-to-head with Knights varsity golfers.

In addition, Event Management and Public Relations (both Graduate Certificate programs) students gained hands-on event experience at the tournament; Paramedic students provided blood pressure checks for the golfers; culinary students provided lunch on-site with Bench-on-the-Go food truck; and students from the College’s wine and Brewmaster programs led wine/ale/lager tastings. Representatives from NC’s Co-Op and Graduate Employment Services gave an overview of employer co-op opportunities; and students from Sustainability at Niagara College identified animal and insect species on the golf course.

The event capped off with a buffet dinner and awards ceremony where top golfers from the tournament as well as from  additional competitions including a putting competition, longest drive competitions, and a closest to the NC Keg competition were honoured (see list of winners below).

The successful event was chaired by Joseph McCallum (secretary/treasurer of the College’s Foundation board), and featured opening remarks from the College’s vice-president of External Relations Greg Medulun.

It was supported by several sponsors including Rankin Construction (presenting sponsor), St. Catharines Standard, Niagara Falls Review, and The Welland Tribune (presenting media sponsors), and Johnson Insurance (ace sponsor), and more.
